This or that
Quick-fire choices like "side quests or main story?". You see how alike you are.
Dating and friendship for gamers and introverts. You meet behind a mask, play something together, and reveal yourselves one step at a time.
Concept deck, 24/10/2026. "Player Two" is a working title.
Both people have to say yes before either moves up a step. Nobody is told who said "not yet".
Your games, when you play, your play style.
A voice note or a quick voice chat while you play.
The first real-world detail.
The mask cracks as you get closer, then falls away.
Discord, Steam or phone number. Take it outside the app.
Why it works: people decide whether they like each other before they decide whether they fancy each other.
The same selfie check covers UK age verification (slide 9), stops catfishing, and makes bans hard to get round.
We'd buy the check from a specialist provider such as Yoti or Veriff rather than build it ourselves.
A match doesn't start with a blank chat. It starts with a five-minute game for two inside the app. Chat opens once you've played.
Quick-fire choices like "side quests or main story?". You see how alike you are.
A small puzzle you can only solve together. Teamwork shows more than a bio ever does.
Link Steam, Xbox, PSN or Discord, see the games you both play, and queue up together for real.
A small "lobby" of matches each evening instead of an endless feed. Fewer, better, no swiping frenzy.
Show whether you're up for voice tonight or would rather text. No pressure to perform.
Reply when you're ready. Nobody sees "seen 3 hours ago".
"You both have 200 hours in Stardew. Best farm layout?" Conversation starters that aren't small talk.
Looking for a duo partner, not a date? Choose dating, friends or both. Same masks, same reveal steps.
Money comes from mask designs and cosmetics. Gamers already buy skins, and nobody pays to be seen.
An illegal-harms risk assessment and a children's risk assessment, report and block tools, and a named person responsible for safety.
Under UK GDPR, face data is biometric, a special category, so we'd need a data protection impact assessment and would delete the selfie after the check.
This is a summary, not legal advice. Get it checked before launch.

Our quick read, not deep research yet. Nobody seems to combine masks, verification underneath and playing first.
Being online first helps: distance doesn't matter, so the whole UK is one pool, and friends mode adds people. We'd still start in one community, like a Discord server or a streamer's audience.
Reports, blocks and a person who answers them, from day one. Masks make this matter more, not less.
Each selfie check costs a small fee per person, before anyone pays us. We need a free tier that doesn't run at a loss.
Dating lives on phones. Native apps, live chat and app store review are new ground for us.
If the first game is a chore, the idea falls over. Prototype it on paper with friends first.
Hinge could add masks. Our edge is the gaming community and getting the feel right.
Answers from the idea's authors, 24/10/2026:
1. Play "this or that" on paper with a few friends who've never met.
2. Show these mockups to ten gamers and ask whether they'd sign up.
3. Sketch the mask designs: they're the brand and the shop.
Mockups to show the feel, not final designs. Every screen is built around one rule: you show more of yourself only when you both want to.
Pick a mask, pass a private selfie check, then meet a small lobby of players each evening.
Play first, chat second, and step up the reveal ladder together.
Each step is a request. Both of you have to say yes, and nobody is told who said "not yet".
Games, play times, play style.
A voice note, or chat while you play.
The first real-world detail.
Checked against the selfie, so it's really them.
Discord, Steam or phone. Take it outside the app.
